I Am Number Four

No, I am not speaking of the just released suspense thriller, another time perhaps. Today, the Economist Intelligence Unit has delivered its findings on the liveability survey naming the most liveable cities in the world. Topping the list for the fifth straight year in a row is Vancouver, British Columbia followed by Melbourne, Australia; Vienna, Austria and coming in at number four...........Toronto, Ontario. A complete list of the top 10 and bottom 10 can be found here: Vancouver is the world’s most livable city for a fifth straight-year: survey

The findings are based on 30 qualitative and quantitative factors across five generalized areas of criteria which are stability; healthcare; culture and environment; education; and infrastructure. Each factor in a city is rated as acceptable, tolerable, uncomfortable, undesirable or intolerable.

February 2011

This is of course terrific news for Toronto especially considering the local newspapers have been slamming the healthcare system of late in its treatment of the elderly. Today's Toronto Star reported an elderly patient was told to "pay $1800 dollars a day or get out". Nice.

Toronto scored high in all areas with the exception of infrastructure. Could it be the lack of bicycle paths or the fact that there are 2007 traffic control signals installed on 10,033 different streets covering 27.4 per cent of the city's area resulting in 20,371 intersections. So you see when describing my 6 km drive to tennis I was not exaggerating.
If Toronto could make mountains out of mole hills, literally, (figuratively it does daily) then it would be identical to Vancouver, except for never having hosted the olympics. It's not from lack of trying. Three bids for the 1996, 2008 and 2020 olympics and not one bite. There's always next time. Like I always say when I'm out on the golf course, "FOUR" ain't too shabby.
