A Buffalo, New York businessman has created a commercial promoting his "Made in America" store. The business was created out of frustration after the owner was forced to layoff 20 employees from his manufacturing business as a result of losing several large accounts to China. Fed up with the loss of jobs going overseas, the owner now sells only American made products in his Made in America store. Oddly enough, he had me in his corner right up until the end of the commercial. This is where a young girl perhaps nine or ten years old ends the advertisement by saying you should shop at the store because, "China's a long way to drive to work." Seriously, this is what he comes up with? It reminded be of that all too common bumper sticker, “Out of a job yet? Keep buying foreign.” I have yet to see a bumper sticker say, “Out of a job yet? Join a union.” I’m just saying.
In this post 9/11 world it has become quite common for folks to demonstrate such an overt display of patriotism such as this. While the owner’s intentions may be honourable they also run the risk of being misunderstood. Can you say redneck?
Bottom line is most consumers will pay for quality goods regardless of where they are made. It’s called capitalism. So long as the Made in America products are of good quality and competitively priced the support will be there. Otherwise, folks will flock to their local Walmart, which incidentally could be considered the original “Made in America” franchise accused of putting the ‘mom and pop’ shops out of business. I'm just saying.
