Lighten Up People

They (who ever they are) say laughter is the best medicine. I couldn’t agree more. Humour can be an instrument of healing when used properly. Having the ability to diffuse difficult and sensitive situations is a skill that not too many of us can lay claim to. People need to develop these skills as they would other disciplines like coaching, leadership and even arguing. I am so good at this last one.

There was no better example of this than the one demonstrated on 9/11.
September 11, 2001 was no doubt one of the watershed events of the 21st century. As the events unfolded everyone wanted to help but no one really knew what to do. Physicians and other healthcare professionals descended on the hospitals in lower Manhattan and waited for the injured to arrive. They never did. People by the thousands donated blood; money started flooding in at an overwhelming rate; help descended on the city of New York and covered it like a blanket. Then Mayor, Rudy Giuliani stepped up to the plate and took charge reassuring the masses that this event would not break the American spirit. A short time later he made an appearance on Saturday Night Live, still one of the funniest and longest running comedy shows on television, and when asked by the show’s producer Lorne Michaels if it was ok to be funny, Giuliani replied, “Why start now?” A little laughter was just what the doctor ordered.

My point is (and I do have one) people need to lighten up and I don’t mean weight wise. (Although globally there are over 1 billion overweight adults but that’s a whole other blog) And on that note I will leave you with the words of Eric Idle.

Some things in life are bad
They can really make you mad
Other things just make you swear and curse.
When you're chewing on life's gristle
Don't grumble, give a whistle
And this'll help things turn out for the best...

And...always look on the bright side of life...
Always look on the light side of life...
