Altrurustic Me

In general terms, volunteering is the practice of people working on behalf of others or a particular cause without payment for their time and services. A fine example would be parenting. As well, volunteering is described as an altruistic activity, intended to promote good or improve human quality of life. A fine example would be parenting. By the way parenting is a thankless volunteer job.

Some people who volunteer however have ulterior motives. Yes there are self-serving volunteers out there and if they are in need of a leader they need not look any further than my own backyard. Well, that is if I had a backyard. So they need look no further than my own 4th floor balcony.

Don't get me wrong. People volunteer for different reasons. They may have time on their hands. (i.e. not employed) They may want to meet people. (i.e. make contacts to get employed) Or they simply may want to have fun. (i.e. get out of the house before finally becoming employed) Whatever the reason self serving or not, volunteering is an essential service and it also looks good on your resume. Plus you get to tell complete strangers what to do and where to go. Nice gig if you can get it.

So the next time you come across a hard working volunteer thank them and if at all possible, offer them a real job.
