Wait Not, Want Not

Is the death penalty coming to Canada? That is the question posed on the Sympatico home page. Canada already has the death penalty as far as I’m concerned and it falls under the guise of Canada’s Health Care System. Here’s how a typical appointment unfolds. You go and wait. Then wait some more. Then wait a little longer. Then someone comes and gives you the good news, ``it won’t be long now.`` Then roughly three and a half to four hours later you see someone for about five minutes, usually less. When you are finally seen by someone, this person will give you some lame referral and phone numbers so you can make yet another appointment probably with a specialist this time and you get to start the waiting process all over again. And it goes on and on and on. Voila. Label it health care or call it what you will but it will be the death of us all if something doesn`t change and soon.

There is a phenomenon, referred to as `white coat syndrome``, where a person would experience elevated blood pressure in a clinical setting but nowhere else. It is believed that this is due to the anxiety some people experience when seeing their doctor. Now I see it is merely the result of being highly frustrated from waiting and waiting and waiting and waiting some more to see a health care professional. There should be warnings placed in all medical offices.
``Visiting your health care provider could be hazardous to your health. We guarantee you will not leave here empty handed. You`ll definitely go home with something; probably the flu; definitely a cold. The good news is your blood pressure should return to normal within five minutes of leaving the premises. ``
