The most irritating words in the English language according to a new poll are “whatever” followed by “like” and my all time favourite, “you know what I mean”. Actually, no I don’t, and by the way, “actually” also made the list along with “to tell the truth”. These words were found to be more popular with 18-29 year olds. This is amusing in itself since the 18 year old I live with couldn’t possibly construct a sentence with the phrase “to tell the truth” in it and “actually” be doing it. Quite the opposite I’m afraid. So “to tell the truth”, “like” this poll “actually” kind of sucks if “you know what I mean”. “Whatever”.
It’s not the words so much, but the way in which they are delivered that is deemed annoying. Timing is their strong suit. The word “whatever”, for example, has been described as being very dismissive. “OMG the Mayans were right and December 12, 2012, aside from being a very bad movie, will be the end of the world!” “Whatever”.
So in keeping with the spirit of the season, I have devised a list of my own irritating words I would like to share with my readers. They are in no particular order: sold out; out of stock; back-ordered; delisted; just sold the last one; the sale ended yesterday; and my all time favourite-sorry, the largest we have is a 9
