Living Longer Might Cost You

This is a good news, bad news story. The good news is we are living longer, healthier lives. The bad news is we really can't afford to do this. Folks entitled to government services like health-care; pensions and long-term care will soon outnumber the workforce. If folks aren't working whose taxes are going to pay for these benefits? Next time some interviewer asks, "Why do you want to work here?", the correct reponse should be "So your taxes don't increase." The table has turned.

As well, a study conducted in 13 countries suggested the earlier a person retires the more quickly their memory declines. The simple answer would be to get folks to retire later. This way older workforces could continue to contribute to the funding of these programs and benefits and in doing so help prevent memory loss. It's a win-win situation. So much for freedon 55. We'll have to come up with warnings for retirement. "Caution: Retirement may be hazardous to your health. Maintain your brain!" Maybe we could borrow from the drug campaign.

Don't be a Dick.
