Oh Say, Can You Read?
There were as many fumbles off the field as on during the 2011 Superbowl. Even before the game started the first of the Superbowl snafus surfaced. Christina Aguilera screwed up the American national anthem in front of a U.S. viewing audience of 111 million football and television commercial fans. Needless to say the entertainment news media had a field day with this faux pas. She flubbed her lines, screwed up, messed up and even fumbled before the actual kick-off. Hitting those high notes, “o’er the land of the free” should have been the toughest part of singing the anthem. Knowing the lyrics should be a pre requisite for getting the gig. “What so proudly we watched” while we watched Christina butcher the anthem, we were sure the half-time show would make up for her botched job. Were we wrong?
Where were the acoustics in this billion dollar dome? The Black Eyed Peas sounded just plain bad but the lights and costume designs were great. The good news is they will not be paid. Seems the half time entertainment at Superbowls is for exposure only. So it is true, you do get what you pay for.
Finally, 400 ticket holders were told, "no seat for you" and forced to watch the game in a tent outside the stadium when temporary seating was not made available in time for the big game. The holders of these tickets have already been promised entry into next year’s Superbowl.
The game itself did not disappoint. It was a Texas style barn burner. It was to be expected since everything’s bigger in Texas. It’s one of those good news, bad news endings however. The good news was the game was great. The bad news is the season’s over. See you in September.
