Why Do Birds Suddenly Appear.............

Officials in Arkansas reported thousands of dead and dying blackbirds apparently fell from the sky on New Year’s Eve in the small town of Beebe. There is only speculation as to the cause. Some suspect a lightning strike or perhaps a high altitude hail storm as the cause. Perhaps, like many of us, the birds overindulged a bit too much while ringing in the New Year, party animals that they are. Or was it a Beebetown Windex mass suicide. I know whenever I would clean my picture windows, (which wasn’t often) birds seemed to fly right into them like they were on some kind of kamikaze mission. Is Windex that alluring? Is it in fact a bird pheromone?

It could be our fine feathered friends were just lonely and seeking refuge with the good folks of Beebe. The popular singing duo of Richard and Karen Carpenter actually sang about this in the early 70’s.

“Why do birds suddenly appear
Every time you are near?
Just like me, they long to be
Close to you”

But that’s not all. Further north, thousands of drum fish have been killed and are washing up on the shores of the Arkansas River. Did they also over imbibe on New Year’s? Is this where the expression, “drinks like a fish” originated? You decide. Sounds kind of fishy to me. (sorry couldn't help myself) Let the conspiracy theories begin.
