Sequestered Sport's Sunday
The only thing that could be better than having two football playoff games and the round of 16 of the Australian Open Tennis Championships on television today would be if the Patriots and Andy Roddick were still in the running. This will not deter me however from finding some rationale for watching it all.
For starters, a twenty year old from Thornhill, Ontario named Milos Raonic, pronounced Milosh, has advanced to the round of 16 and will play David Ferrer. There hasn’t been a Canadian player in the round of 16 since Daniel Nestor made it in 1999.
Of course the name Milos immediately reminded me of the Seinfeld episode where there’s a tennis pro named Milosh and Jerry decides to buy a racket from him because he thinks he is a great tennis player. Turns out he isn’t and to make it up to Jerry, Milosh pulls a Henny Youngman and asks Jerry to “take my wife, please”, as if it were some form of medieval compensation. It seems TSN was also reminded of this Seinfeld segment and thus began their coverage of this soon to be top 100 player in the world. But unlike Seinfeld’s Milosh, Milos is in the words of bad boy John McEnroe, “the real deal.”
As for football, I will be rooting for the Steelers simply because they will be playing the team whose name need not be mentioned but were responsible for eliminating the Patriots. And in the NFC match-up between the Chicago Bears and Green Bay Packers, I will wait and cheer on the underdog, whoever that may be.
Provisions are in place. It’s a day to sit back, relax and enjoy. Besides it’s too damn cold outside to do anything else.
