Could you answer the following question correctly?
Which of the following best describes the War of 1812?
1. Canada joined the U.S. after the war. (I didn’t make this up btw.)
2. Napoleon’s fleet was defeated by the Royal Navy in the war.
3. The USA became independent from the British Empire after the war. (Just in case 1776 doesn’t ring a bell)
4. The USA invaded Canada and was defeated, which ensured that Canada would remain independent of the United States. (If you went to school in the states you may not know this.)
This is an actual question on the official citizenship test. If you answered 4 then congratulations, you have obviously done your homework and are on your way to becoming a Canadian citizen. According to the CBC, in March of 2010, there was a 30%failure rate for immigrants taking the Canadian citizenship test. A revamped test was introduced in October to facilitate a higher pass rate. The national failure rate has now been reduced to 20%. Can we do one better? What would most immigrants know about this country of ours that they so wish to adopt as their own? Could it be the simple things like universal symbols greatly perceived as representative of Canada like the beaver, moose, or maple leaf? Why not ask them this?
Which of the following sentences would you respond; she’s right cold, eh?

4. The mother-in-law is coming for a visit.
5. All of the above.
Easy, right? Here’s another.

1. As much as you can wear under your coat or hide in your vehicle;
2. We are supposed to declare this stuff?
3. It depends on the number of days you have spent outside the country.
4. Depends on which border guard you get stuck with. (has he/she had lunch; did you piss them off by trying to get a piece of fruit by them; )
5. All of the above.
You decide.
