Sympatico was launched 15 years ago on November 28, 1995 and to commemorate the occasion they are asking the following questions of their readers. Is the world a better place? Has technology made your life easier? What were your most treasured moments in the last 15 years?
Based on the events of September 11, 2001, I would say the world is definitely not a better place. In fact, I would go one step further and say it will never be the same again. For confirmation one must simply look to air travel. There was a time when one could arrive at the airport to depart to their destination minutes before take - off. Nail clippers and files were not considered lethal weapons. Personal hygiene products like shampoo and liquid soap were never viewed as suspect materials. Now these products are routinely being confiscated by airport security causing many a bad hair day for disgruntled travellers. Shoes and belts must be removed; pockets emptied; cells phones turned off; no bottled water or liquids of any kind can be carried on to the plane. And today these same frequent flyers must submit themselves to full body scans and pat downs by untrained TSA agents. Man terrorists really piss me off.
Has technology made our lives easier? I would say yes and no. In 1995 we didn’t even know what Facebook was or a dvd player; ipod; x-box and digital cameras. Now we barely have time to speak to anyone because we’re all plugged in. We really didn’t create a social network more like an anti-social network.
My most treasured moments in the last 15 years? There were many, five to be exact; 4 girls and a boy in 1999; 2001; 2003; 2005; and 2007. But right up there with them is the New England Patriots Superbowl wins 2002; 2004; 2005 and 2008 even though they lost they had a perfect season up to that point!
